About The Role
The Systems Engineer will play a vital role in designing and implementing public safety communication solutions for state and local government agencies using Motorola's ASTRO 25 and related technologies. This remote position involves traveling 25-50% to support various projects, ranging from single-site installations for municipalities to complex statewide systems valued at hundreds of millions of dollars. The successful candidate will work closely with cross-functional teams—including sales, project management, and system engineering—to deliver mission-critical communication systems that meet demanding customer requirements and high-performance standards. The role requires a proactive, detail-oriented engineer capable of managing multiple project phases from design to system acceptance, ensuring seamless deployment, integration, and operational excellence.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s Degree in engineering or a related technical discipline
7+ years of engineering or technical experience, or 10+ years of relevant experience
Legal authorization to work in the U.S. indefinitely (employer sponsorship not available)
Travel flexibility of 25-50%
Relevant certifications such as CompTIA Network+, Juniper JNCIA-Junos, CCNA, Nokia NRS1, or similar (preferred)
Experience with Motorola ASTRO 25 architecture is a plus
Knowledge of radio frequency engineering and land/mobile radio principles
Proficiency with servers and operating systems including VMware ESXi, Linux, and Microsoft platforms
Understanding of RFDS principles, antenna and cable selection, and lightning protection systems
Experience with site construction, grounding, tower development, and remote communication site setup
Familiarity with network devices and protocols such as Fortinet and Juniper firewalls, Nokia routers, MPLS, BGP, OSPF, and SNMP
Knowledge of physical media including fiber, copper, and microwave systems
Strong communication, collaboration, and interpersonal skills
Responsibilities
Lead the technical design and deployment of radio networks, including infrastructure, subscribers, mobile backhaul, WAN, and CEN networks
Engage with customers and consultants through design reviews, staging, acceptance testing, and troubleshooting efforts
Oversee system buildout, configuration, and acceptance testing in lab and field environments
Conduct radio coverage testing, frequency analysis, and interference mitigation strategies
Manage radio system licensing processes in compliance with FCC and industry standards
Develop system fleet maps, encryption protocols, and radio programming templates
Prepare comprehensive system documentation and reports
Coordinate live system cutovers, upgrades, and system acceptance activities
Collaborate with project teams to ensure timely delivery and high-quality implementation of solutions
Maintain current knowledge of industry standards, new technologies, and best practices in radio and network engineering
