
Staff Software Engineer (Backend) - Everand Core

Accountabilities: Define and drive the technical direction of backend systems by creating design proposals, leading architecture discussions, and translating complex product requirements into scalable solutions. Build, maintain, and improve backend platforms that power content discovery, personalization, reading, and listening experiences across digital products. Own backend reliability, platform health, and operational excellence, including CI/CD pipelines, databases, queues, observability, cost optimization, and system performance. Design and develop clean, secure, maintainable, and scalable backend services using modern programming languages and engineering practices. Lead modernization initiatives by improving legacy systems, reducing technical debt, and increasing platform scalability and development velocity. Establish engineering standards through code reviews, technical mentorship, pairing, documentation, and knowledge sharing. Partner with product managers, designers, analytics teams, web engineers, mobile engineers, and machine learning teams to deliver impactful platform capabilities. Drive cross-functional technical execution by acting as a backend engineering advocate in planning, prioritization, and strategic discussions. Use data, metrics, telemetry, and experimentation insights to guide technical decisions and improve system performance. Promote a culture of technical excellence, continuous improvement, collaboration, and user-focused engineering. Requirements: Significant professional experience in backend engineering with a proven track record of designing and scaling distributed systems. Strong programming experience in at least one modern backend language such as Ruby, Scala, Go, Python, or similar technologies. Experience leading technical initiatives, defining architecture, mentoring engineers, and driving large-scale migrations or platform improvements. Deep understanding of backend reliability, observability, system monitoring, performance optimization, and distributed system debugging. Ability to design scalable, resilient, and maintainable software architectures. Strong experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including product, design, analytics, and machine learning stakeholders. Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence technical decisions and align teams around shared goals. Passion for building user-centered products and translating customer needs into effective technical solutions. Experience with Ruby is a strong asset. Experience with large-scale distributed systems, recommendation platforms, experimentation tools, feature flagging systems, or ML-powered products is considered an advantage.
