Recognized for its forward-thinking approach, UnitedHealth Group fosters a culture of continuous innovation, collaboration, and inclusion, aiming to create a healthier future for individuals and communities worldwide. About The Role We are seeking a highly skilled AI/ML Engineer to join our dynamic Claim Edit Hub team as part of our AI 10.0 Scaling initiative. This role is pivotal in leveraging artificial intelligence and machine learning to enhance claim processing accuracy and transparency. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and deploying scalable AI/ML models that support processing rules directly from source documentation, such as policies, and exposing them via Agentic workflows for real-time accessibility. This position offers the flexibility to work remotely within the United States, with specific in-office requirements for employees based in Minneapolis or Washington, D.C. The role provides an exciting opportunity to contribute to innovative projects that directly impact healthcare delivery and cost management, supporting our 'shift left' strategy to enable claim edits and rules to be executed on trial claims for better cost transparency and provider engagement. Qualifications The ideal candidate will possess a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Engineering, or a related technical field. A minimum of 8 years of experience in software engineering, AI engineering, or machine learning engineering is required, with at least 5 years of strong Python development supporting AI and data-intensive applications. Candidates should have at least 4 years of hands-on experience developing AI/ML solutions, including Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), Natural Language Processing (NLP), and traditional machine learning models. Experience in designing, building, and deploying production-grade LLM applications, Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines, AI agents, and orchestration workflows is essential. Familiarity with AWS AI services such as Bedrock, SageMaker, Lambda, OpenSearch, ECS/EKS, and S3, along with experience in vector databases, embeddings, semantic search, and enterprise knowledge retrieval systems, is highly preferred. Additionally, candidates should have a solid understanding of MLOps, LLMOps, model monitoring, evaluation frameworks, and AI operationalization practices. Responsibilities The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and deploying scalable AI/ML models and automation solutions to address complex business challenges within healthcare claims processing. This includes building and maintaining end-to-end machine learning pipelines encompassing data ingestion, feature engineering, model training, and deployment. Developing automation frameworks for model testing, validation, and monitoring (MLOps) will be essential to ensure continuous performance and reliability. Collaborating closely with data science, engineering, product, and business teams to deliver innovative AI-driven solutions is a core aspect of this role. The engineer will optimize model performance through ongoing evaluation, tuning, and retraining strategies, ensuring models are scalable, reliable, and compliant with governance standards. Integration of AI/ML solutions into production systems using CI/CD pipelines and cloud platforms will be a key responsibility. Staying current with emerging AI/ML technologies and best practices to drive continuous innovation and operational excellence is expected. The role also involves supporting the development of reusable AI platform services, implementing retrieval-augmented generation, semantic search, and enterprise knowledge systems, and contributing to the advancement of multi-agent architectures and autonomous workflow orchestration.
