Germany's largest statutory health insurer is hiring ten Java developers in Hamburg on an eighteen-month AUG engagement.

The work is modernising the platform that more than eleven million members' insurance runs through — migrating a legacy Swing interface to React, without breaking a system that handles millions of transactions a day.

  • 18 months, AUG
  • 40 hours a week, Monday to Friday
  • Around 60% home office, roughly two days a week on site in Hamburg
  • ASAP

What you will do

  • Migrate legacy Swing dialogs to React components
  • Work with UI and UX designers and implement dialog migration specifications
  • Write JUnit tests for every migrated dialog and run department acceptance testing
  • Extend and enhance migrated legacy dialogs
  • Full-stack Java development across the wider platform
  • Code analysis and reverse engineering of legacy modules, and technical debt reduction
  • Work in agile teams using Scrum or Kanban and Jira
  • AI-assisted development using GitHub Copilot

What you need

  • A completed degree in Computer Science, or a comparable qualification such as Fachinformatiker Anwendungsentwicklung
  • At least five years of Java development on large projects with five or more developers
  • Demonstrable experience with legacy code — analysis, reverse engineering, integrating inherited codebases
  • Experience creating or modernising user interfaces, ideally Swing to React or comparable
  • Agile delivery with Scrum or Kanban, and Jira
  • German at C1, able to lead technical discussions
  • The right to work in Germany

If you have worked with Swing you are in a small group. Say so at the top of your CV.
